Hopes Rescue Fostering FAQ
everything checks out you will contacted by the foster team for a phone interview, then somebody will visit your house for a home check and then will begin pairing you with a foster pet that is right for you.
Why should I foster?
In order to save pets from shelters, Hope’s Rescue needs committed foster homes to love and care for the animals until they are adopted. Every foster volunteer
we have allows Hope’s Rescue to save another pet and help it find a loving forever home.
How long will a foster pet stay with me?
The duration of foster care can vary from a couple of days to several weeks, or more for pets with special needs. The majority of our foster pets find a loving forever home within 2 – 6 weeks.
What will I be responsible for as a foster?
Aside from regular day-to-day care (feeding, grooming and exercise), the responsibilities of a foster home may include:
Basic training (housetraining, walking on leash, sit, down)
Behavior modification (to correct problems such as jumping, mouthing, barking, destructive chewing and dashing through doors) Socialization and temperament evaluation (to determine whether the dog is good with different types of people and other animals)
Why do I have to bring my foster to adoption events?
Adoption events are the most successful way to introduce your foster to the largest amount of people. While Petfinder, HopesRescue.org, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest are all great ways to show your foster off to potential adopters, in-person events are the best way for a potential adopter to fall in love with your foster.
How many events to I have to attend per month?
Typically there are four adoption events per month, held in the Ogden/Layton area. We require that you participate in at least two events per month.
What if I need to travel?
If you could make temporary arrangements with a friend/relative to look after your foster that would be ideal. Please understand that we have limited space with our foster families, and many of them are unable to accept an extra animal, even for a few days. If you are unable to make suitable arrangements on your own for a reliable substitute, please email us at: tempfoster@hopesrescue.org so that we can assist you in finding temporary care for your foster. Please provide two weeks’ notice if you are planning on being out of town.
What can we expect when we get a new foster pet?
It is important to realize your foster is coming into a new environment. Some animals may be anxious or excited, while others may be shy, quiet, or withdrawn. Accidents may happen, as your foster gets adjusted to new routines. Typically, most animals take a few days to settle in to their new surroundings. So please be patient with your foster while he/she adjusts to a strange new place. Lots of patience and lots of love will go a long way to help your new foster relax, feel at home, and start to build a bond of trust with you.
Besides food, what do we need to provide?
A clean, warm, safe haven with plenty of playtime and snuggling! Also, basic supplies of leash, collar, food bowls. You will be responsible for taking them to any necessary vet appointments, and administering any necessary medications.
Who pays for medical care?
All medical care including spay/neuter and microchip for approved Hope’s Rescue fosters will be paid for by Hope’s Rescue and must be scheduled by an approved vet. In the event you need to take your foster to a vet, please email vets@hopesrescue.org with your name, the name of your foster, your phone number, symptoms or services required, and the vet nearest you to get scheduled for an appointment.
Which vets can I use?
We have arrangements with veterinary clinics conveniently located throughout the Salt Lake Valley and Ogden area.
Do I get to help choose my foster pet’s forever family?
We want to give our foster pets the very best chance for a long and happy life with a forever family. We encourage you to share your insights about your foster with us, including the type of forever home you feel might work best for them. As a foster parent, your input is crucial to helping match your foster to a prospective adopter!
